Cambodia '08 Part 2

i'm back...

well the last update ended at day 2... so now lets get things rolling again shall we?

Day 3

we woke up at about 4am local time and had our breakfast by 6am... got our sleepy asses on the van and its off to Siem Reap! well its not easy to doze off during the trip... the highway was like only two lanes and bumpy as hell... i mean our crappiest roads in Penang beats their highway... oh yeah and did i mention Cambodians drive like total nuts? their roads arent two ways, not one way...... oh no... its ANYway... the road can go from two lanes to one and two again.... driving in Cambodia = Dangerous....

the best section of the highway.... and the widest.... =.=

they still travel like this...

have you ever seen that many people on a small truck? well this isnt the worst by their standards...

well everyone had to take a leak so we stopped at this so called rest stop.... there were a few people selling fried grasshoppers and spiders... they smell like "Bak Kua"... seriously...

that's rice...

and yes.... the grasshoppers and spiders.... yummy..... X.X

back on the road... we saw the farmer's houses and its sad to see them living in such poverty... their environment is filthy and that's the best they can do... well lunch was lousy.... we didnt really stuff ourselves during lunch because the driver told us right after this, even bumpier roads ahead... oh GOD!!

the food.... lousy...

it wasnt actually a road... its more like a path the people cleared for vehicles to enter.... it was bumpy, scary, and uncomfortable.... and it took us like an hour to look for the ancient temples...... on the way we saw villages with small houses.... those houses got no electricity and water.... we finally arrived and we met our temple site guide.... i forgot his name.... anyway he told us that the temples look like crap because it was destroyed by bombs during the war and some by natural causes.... temples built at that time were called Prasat... we started at Prasat Yeai Poeun... Yeai Poeun means "Grandmother Hide".... wtheck?? the whole area where all the ancient temples are is called Sambor Prei Kuk....

tour guide dude...

after we left the temple site we went back on the road... great... we stopped at an 800 year old bridge that is still in use but only accesible to people and two wheeled vehicles....

we finally arrived at Siem Reap around 5pm.... we checked into the Royal Empire Hotel.... i have to say, mum booked us the mother of all budget hotels.... it didnt look like a budget hotel at all.... ok maybe it isnt one but the rates are low... we took a little swim in the salt water pool.... yes the water was salty... we went for dinner at 6.30pm....

dinner was at Tonle Chaktomuk.... another buffet.... the place and the food was fantastic..!! after dinner we headed back to the hotel and got some sleep....

signing off...
